Recent Brent Kelly Law recruit Emma Gedye has spent most of her life living and working in Te Awamutu. Joining our team as a Law Clerk, she’s full of energy and passion for the law. We catch up with her on her background, her current study to obtain her law degree and what makes her tick.
Law Clerk Emma Gedye has spent most of her life as a local in Te Awamutu, after relocating here as a child from Cambridge when she was ten.
“I did most of my schooling here in TA and have lived here most of my life, except for a couple of stints living in Hamilton and Tauranga of about 3 years at each place,” says Emma.
“My first real job was in Tauranga working in an IP Law firm as an Office Junior, but I soon found my way back home to TA and started working as a Legal Secretary at a local firm.”
She then qualified as a Legal Executive and joined a Hamilton law firm, before taking a break to start a family with husband, Bevan.
“After returning to work in TA, I built up my experience in a variety of areas including precedent based administration work, residential conveyancing, commercial law, trusts and estates and more recently, as a project-based Law Clerk.”
Looking for a change in 2021, she joined Brent Kelly Law as a Law Clerk and brings her raft of experience to serve our clients.
“I’m currently working on a lot of Trusts, which I’m finding really interesting with the new Trusts Act coming into force earlier this year,” she says.
Getting to know clients and finding solutions for them is what makes her tick.
“I love hearing about their backgrounds and their lives. Knowing your client really helps to deliver the best advice and best service. I get a kick out of finding the right solutions for them.”
While she’s not in the office, Emma is working towards her law degree at Waikato University while juggling home life with three kids and her husband of 13 years.
“Life is busy, but that’s the way I like it,” she says.
“I’m enjoying my new role and every day is different which I love – you never quite know what’s going to land on your desk each day which is a good thing.”
