Feels Like Home

Relocating back to New Zealand, Cameron Gray and fiancé Emma were looking for a place to call home. They called on the help of Brent Kelly Law Director Alex McIvor, who helped navigate them through first home ownership, all during the Coronavirus lockdown.

After a three-year stint living in Amsterdam, engaged couple Cameron and Emma were ready to move home to New Zealand, and put down some roots with their first home.

“We looked at a lot of houses and went to maybe 12-15 open homes before we decided on this one,” says Cameron.

“After living in central-city suburbs in Auckland and Europe, we were really drawn to the 1930’s character of this house, plus it has heaps of space out the back for our two dogs.”

Wanting to move quickly, the couple put in a pre-auction offer to get the deal done.

They then contacted Brent Kelly Law Director and property expert Alex McIvor, who Cameron knew from growing up in Te Awamutu.

“Alex understood our concerns throughout the entire buying process,” says Cameron.

“He was proactive and responsive, and did a great job working with the mortgage broker and bank.”

Working under the cloud of the Covid-19 alert level lockdown, there were a few new challenges to contend with.

“We were originally supposed to settle on 4 April, but because of the Covid-19 alert level 4 restrictions, everything slowed down,” he says.

“We had to stay in temporary accommodation until it was appropriate to settle in level 3.”

Cameron says Alex communicated throughout the process, and made things happen quickly once level 2 was announced.

“Alex was able to facilitate moving really quickly when the levels shifted down to level 3,” he says.

“We were grateful that the seller’s side moved quickly too, and there was great communication between the two parties.”

Alex McIvor says working under the Covid-restrictions made things a little more complicated than usual, but it was all about keeping the client informed.

“The alert levels for Covid caused some delays on settlement, but the main thing was to keep Cameron and Emma updated throughout the process,” says Alex.

“In the end we were able to get the deal done pretty efficiently once things opened up again, so it was a good result.”

Three days into alert level 2, the couple settled on their new home in Cambridge, and couldn’t be happier.

“When we got the keys, it was a great feeling and a huge relief,” says Cameron.

“We were really, really ready to move in by that stage.”

“Now we just need all of our possessions to arrive from the Netherlands, which are still tied up at NZ customs. Then it will really feel like home.”
