Priya goes out of her way

It’s easy to see why Brent Kelly Law Associate Priya Takhar is popular with both her clients and team members. Well liked by everyone, she goes the extra mile to get the job done. In this profile we catch up with her on her recent promotion from Senior Solicitor to Associate, and how she got into law in the first place.

A Te Awamutu local, Priya grew up on a Dairy Farm before leaving school to study nursing in Australia. After returning home to New Zealand, she enrolled at Waikato University, completing a double degree in Management and Law five years later.

“I graduated from Waikato and worked as a Junior Solicitor at a local firm for the next five years, building up experience in property and family law,” she says.

Meeting her future husband Nick, the couple got married and relocated to the UK to be closer to Nick’s family from Wales.

“We lived in Yorkshire and North Wales, and I practiced property law, which I really enjoyed,” she says.

“But my parents were getting older, so after a few years in the UK we decided to relocate back to this side of the world to be nearer them.”

Priya and Nick ran a pub for the next seven years, and Priya got to know the locals.

“I enjoyed the people interaction at the pub, getting to know the regulars and having a laugh,” she says.

“I was keen to get back to law, so Brent Kelly Law took a chance on me,” she jokes.

Now, Priya mostly works on property and estate law matters.

“People are generally really happy when they seek legal advice for property, so that’s a great perk to my job,” she says.

“I love helping people get into their new home, I get a sense of reward every time.”

She says having a sense of humour helps her to build relationships with clients and creates a relaxed atmosphere.

“I’ve been told by clients that they love that they can have a joke with me,” she says.

“I enjoy having a laugh with people and dropping the stress levels with humour – I think most people appreciate my straight up approach.”

Positive client feedback is often rolling in for Priya, and it’s evident to see she goes the extra mile.

One client recently commented on Facebook saying “Wonderful lady. Nothing is a problem,” while another sent her a bottle of wine and chocolates to say thanks last week.

The sentiment is backed up by her team at Brent Kelly Law.

“Priya consistently goes out of her way to help her clients no matter what their situation is,” says Brent Kelly Law Partner Alex McIvor.

“We are very lucky to have her. Not only is she excellent with clients, she is also an outstanding team player who gets along incredibly well with the rest of the staff.”

When asked what it means to be promoted to Associate, Priya says it’s nice to get recognition for her efforts.

“It’s nice to be recognised for the work I put in,” she says.

“I enjoy my clients and I like to make extra effort, so it’s great to have that acknowledgement.”
